report mentioned a lifeboat capsizing off Slains (north of Aberdeen)

I am in the process

sailing out of Hull and Fleetwood. They were drawn by my uncle, Harry
Wright, who was an amateur artist. He drew over 600 ships. Many were
given away to friends, and I am told that 200 of them found their way
to Australia. I have managed to accumulate from friends and family about
140 of his drawings, one of which is of MMS 206. I am assuming that
this is the vessel on which he served as a Chief Petty Officer. Does
anyone remember CPO Harry Wright or MMS 206? Also, is there anyone out
there who possesses one or more of his drawings. If so, I would be very
grateful to receive a scan. It might be possible (if the reproduction
is clear enough) to include it in my proposed book. The trawlers were
always drawn in pen-and-pastel, broadside on so as to show details of
their rigging, colours and numbers. |

Martin Olesen, 1877 -
1946, originally Danish, sailed from Grimsby for many years and from Fleetwood
during the war. He rescued a Danish boat which was adrift after a gale
after fleeing from German occupied Denmark. In the early 1920s he took
the family on the trawler Offa to Nova Scotia and was one of the first
to use a steam trawler on the Grand Banks working for Maritime Fisheries,
or so I believe. I have a list of some of the trawlers he sailed with;
Cambodia, Caulonia, Lord Beaconsfield, Carmenia, Offa, Itonian, Magen
. I have some very faded photos of some of these trawlers and their crews. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who might have some info about them or my Grandfather, and would see if the photos can be scanned and enhanced for anyone who is interested. Jennifer Bradford |

Hello I am researching for a book concerning people from Knowle and Dorridge in Warwickshire who were killed during WW2. Ernest Walter Pimm died of injuries following a petrol explosion in Danehill which caused her total loss on Monday Dec. 1st 1941. At the time of the tragedy She was berthed in the River Tyne. Does a photograph of the vessel exist? Was anyone else killed in the explosion? Any help at all would be most appreciated. Kindest regards Michael Harrison. PS. did you know that Northern Rover had a rose named after her? |

Dear Sir, My Grandfather Leading Seaman John Innes served aboard HM Trawler Sedgefly, which was lost 16th December 1939. Whereas the date of his death is listed by the Commonwealth war graves commission as the 14th December 1939. This corresponds with the date of the loss of HM Trawler James Ludford. As there were four boats lost in the Tyne area between the 13th to the 16th December 1939. I wonder if he was cross posted to the James Ludford or if anyone has any information about the Sedgefly at all. Yours Neil Cameron |

originally a radio operator on wooden ships possibly 'The Goat'. He did
work on minesweeping and was based at North East command. He had reached
the rank of Lieutenant Commander by 1942. I know he towed Mulberry Harbours
in for the D-Day landings. He finished up on the Solway Firth looking
after U Boats. He may also have served on HMS Hawthorn and a Trawler coded

My grandfather Jack Holmes
(full name John Edward Holmes) served in the RNVR during WW2 and I would
love to hear if anyone recalls serving with him. He died in 1963 when
I was 7 but I still remember him going to sea as a trawlerman from Hull
in 1960 and he would then be 80 years old before he retired!! From what
I have learnt of the Harry Tates Navy I guess that would be in character.
At home however he was a lovely, kind man and his youngest son Alan (who
is now 77) and myself have many questions about his service, especially
as he would never talk about his experiences in the war. He was awarded
the DSM on 2nd June 1943 but he would never discuss with his family what it was for. His service record states that he was at HMS Europa from 27th July - 1st August 1940, and on 2nd August - 31st December 1940 was posted to the "Beaver" as Engineman. Then on 1st January 1941 - 14th March 1945 he served on the "Colonsay", being promoted to Chief Engineman on 9.12.41. He returned to Europa on 15th March 1945 and remained there till the end of the war, being released from service on 2nd November 1945. It may be worth noting that his date of birth was 8th August 1879 so he would have been 60 at the outbreak of the war! He got his Silver Badge on 25th March 1941. If anyone has any information I can be contacted on Sue.Holmes2@btinternet.com |

I wish I had found your
site earlier, my father died recently knowing nothing about the circumstances
of his brother's death other than that he was posted missing presumed
dead on the 11th November 1943. His name was Leonard John Brown, Seaman
LT/JX 400240 and he was with the RNPS. The only information I have is
very sketchy, I have an idea that his ship was attacked by aircraft while
in the Mediterranean. My father kept a photograph of his brother beside
his bed and shortly before he died told me that he thought about him every
day. If you or anyone who reads this can tell me any more I would be very grateful. |
